Thiago lives with his family on an isolated farm in the arid backlands of Minas Gerais, Brazil. As the story unfolds and Thiago is forced to confront separations and betrayal within the home, Thiago begins, little by little, to see and understand a place that he had never been able to before, thus slowly letting go of his innocence. Mutum is an adaptation of the novel Manuelzao e Miguilim by Joao Guimaraes Rosa. A ten year-old boy living in a remote region of the Brazilian mountains enlists the aid of his brother and best friend in order to confront a world defined by silence, betrayal, and violence. Thiago is a child whose unusual insight into the adult world has left him with little hope for the future. In Thiago s eyes, the grown-ups around him seem to sleepwalk through a life defined by pettiness and greed. Perhaps with a little help from his understanding sibling Felipe this gifted young child will learn to create a whole new world. Sandra Kogut was born in Rio de Janeiro and lives in Paris. Her artwork has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum. She has directed several award-winning short films and documentaries, including En francais (93), Lá et Cá (95), Adiu monde ou l histoire de Pierre et Claire (97), Un Passeport Hongrois (01) and Passagers d Orsay (03). Mutum (07) is her first feature film.
